1) Find the Disgn

First assignment of the semester;
1) Find the Design

          Going along with Find the Design assignments from previous semesters, I went with an advertisement from one of my other hobbies that have magazines published. This semester I went with a recipe magazine from Taste of Home magazine, which is a collection of favorite recipes for the current season. Summer here and the time to grill is a must for foodies. The ad is from Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise with their recipe to make a succulent and juicy burger. A quick recipe with 5 simple ingredients and directions on how to make an impressive burger for get-togethers or parties without making that moth fly out of your wallet.

          The principle that I came across first was the use of emphasis. The two items in the ad were a big image of a burger and close to it was the word juicy in all caps! Those are two things that go together for one to experience a perfect burger especially when it comes to grilling meat when it tends to dry them out. Then a third item is the company's brand name to show that any other mayo is inferrer. Everything else is about the same size with both the font and images. This worked very well when skimming through a food magazine and need a quick recipe to impress a few friends and then pass it off as your own. Another principle that could be placed here is Proportion, for the use of making things big can make an item pop out the page and be seen first

          The next principle I checked off was the use of balance. Once I got the ad off the spine, I saw a very noticeable triangle shape in the top half of the page. The font boxes on top are center justified and then the circles gave a base line for the bottom of the triangle. Even with the larger circle on the right, it still has balance when you also consider to what side the spine was on. The spine was located on the right side of the page, so the weight of the items leaned toward the right side. Thinking this over, my eyes were kept within the magazine so as not to let the reader's eyes fall over the edge and out the book. The text boxes on the bottom half were divided into two columns that are about the same width but they balance out the space that the large circle takes up. A lot of little text boxes and images on the left side with a large image and big text box on their opposite. This ad did a good job with using balance as a way to keep the reader's eyes in the middle of the book as much as possible and to keep all the items in an asymmetrical order when also using emphasis on a couple of items.

          Similarity is used a little with the images in the middle to give a rhythmic flow from small items that will lead you to an end result. They made them all the same shape so you can group these together for a quick reference that you pick up with a quick skim of the page. Principles that also could be matched with this can be Rhythm, Unity and Continuation.

So a quick check list of what I found in this ad:
a. Emphasis
b. Proportion
c. Balance
d. Similarity
e. Rhythm
f. Unity
g. Continuation
